After months of Russian military build-up along the Russia-Ukraine border, Russia launched a full-scale invasion of Ukraine on February 24, 2022. It’s the largest military conflict to occur in Europe since World War II and has resulted in more than four million Ukrainians fleeing their country and many thousands killed in the conflict including more than 1600 civilians and over 250 children. It’s projected that 12 million that live or lived in Ukraine will need assistance.
The invasion has been widely condemned by nations around the world as well as by the United Nations General Assembly and citizens all around the world.
The invasion of Ukraine has caused widespread suffering, loss of life, and destruction. Entire neighborhoods within the besieged areas have been destroyed by Russian bombs. The Ukrainian citizens in these areas as well as those who have fled to Europe are in need of food, water, medicine, and
basic supplies.
DJ Friar Don previously held a fund raising event at Tiki Town in December of last year for the people affected by tornadoes in Kentucky. The event raised $850.00 which he donated to the United Way’s Kentucky Tornado Fund. In March, Friar Don expressed a desire to help the people of Ukraine with another charity and the staff and DJs of Tiki Town were more than happy to help out with this event. But
a single two-hour event just didn’t seem enough.
Instead, Tiki Town held a 14 hour event on Saturday, April 9th from 10 AM SLT to midnight SLT and featured eleven different DJs. The DJs that participated were DJ Kizzy, DJ Satanica, DJ Anak, DJ Sol, DJ Sunny, DJ Diabla, DJ Saint, DJ Friar Don, DJ Chloe, DJ Wezo, and DJ Dracona.
A grand total of $L245,100 lindens were donated over the course of the event. Friar Don donated an additional $255.60 resulting in total donations of $599.00 to UNICEF and $600.60 to CARE non-profit charities. Both organizations have been providing humanitarian aid to families in need for decades. UNICEF focuses on helping and protecting children, providing emergency assistance in over 190 countries. CARE works around the world to save lives, defeat poverty and achieve social justice.
Aside from the DJs that participated special thanks goes out to Kytanna, Teresa, David, and especially to Friar Don for helping make this charity event happen and thanks to everyone who donated their lindens, time, and effort to help the people of Ukraine.
